2006 Merlot, Dakine Vineyard - Russian River
Dakine Vineyard is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill on Westside Road in Healdsburg. The vineyard's original owner obtained budwood from the "3 Palms" Merlot vineyard in Napa Valley and planted 3 acres on AXR1 Rootstock in 1988. Oded bought the property from Mondavi/Arrowood in 2005. |

Dense and rumbunctious, this is appealing for its balance of ripe blueberry and tart plum fruit. The flavors are youthful, offering layered spice and licorice notes and ending with minerally tannins. Best from 2009 through 2012. |

In a sea of mediocre Merlots, Longboard's '06 stands out. It's not only deliciously ripe and generous in blackberries, cherries, curants, licorice, cola and mocha flavors, but the structure of fine acidity and smooth, elegant tannins makes it delectable. Editor's Choice. |
