2004 Syrah - Russian River Valley
Inspired by the wines of the Northern Rhône region, our Russian River Valley Syrah is a spicy little number with an ocean spray-in-your face fresh balance of earthy and fruit notes. Lush, without being heavy, with licorice, blackberry and cola notes that yield to coffee and earth nuances. One percent of Cabernet ensures the wine will age as gracefully as you. |

The 2004 vintage in the Russian River Valley was is remembered as one that delivered a small crop of high quality grapes. The vines budded very early and heat spikes in mid summer assured the crop ripened well with ample natural acidity. Grapes from Jim Ledbetter’s Preston Ranch Vineyard, a hillside vineyard overlooking the Russian River, make about 40% of this wine. Grapes from Scott Kerson’s vineyard on Fitch mountain, Vino Farm’s Silk Road Vineyard and Jeff Webber’s ranch on Chalk Hill Road make up the rest. |

Here is a big, well-ripened, solidly varietal Syrah that hits all the right marks in terms of fruit, spice and substance, and it shows an uncommon sense of polish and proportion for the sizeable wine that it is. It is firmed by a fine spine of tannin, but steers clear of any unwelcome coarseness or heat, and its very long, full-flavored finish is directed by lots of lively young fruit that guarantees it will only be better yet if held for a few years of additional age.
